Striking a balance. heat vs cold
Filed under: The Fosters;I’m a strange person I admit it. I cannot STAND being hot. That sounds strange living in Phoenix but let me tell you something. it’s easy to stay cool. They have air conditioning these days and it works pretty well
Seriously though. Madonna and her litter are in the closet of my bedroom. I keep my place cold. 72 degrees. That’s about 12 to 13 degrees too cold for kittens. So I had to figure a way out to make everyone happy.
When my original cats were babies they had this problem too. So i bought an oil based radiant heater. I put it in the bathroom with those kittens and kept it at 85 degrees for them. Perfect!
Well it’s not quite that easy here. i don’t close the closet door and i know she needs it warm. so I’ve struck a balance. I put the heater in the closet and a thermometer. I am keeping it at 78 degrees which should be plenty. The mom cat can warm up her babies if it’s too cold, right?

I admit I can’t stand the heat either and I live in Malaysia! I do pretty much what you have done, cold for me, hot for the babies!
But I use hot water bottles instead. -
lol how you can tolerate malaysia like that is beyond me! you must not go outside much. lol
When I had the two kittens and no mom I used water bottles at first. but it was so cumbersome to constantly replace them. So i bought the heater. I know the dangers of heating pads, and the thought of them bumping into a heater bugged me. So i put it up on the sink.
I also have two indoor/outdoor thermometers that have a remote unit you put outside so you know what the temp is both in and out. I put one of the remotes in the bathroom so I could tell exactly how hot it was. It did work well.
I was blessed with those two kittens though. I don’t remember a single time they cried while alone in that bathroom (after the first day of course). When I’d put them in there they’d sleep. I’d have to wake them up to eat and come out. I was VERY lucky
